INTEGRATED APPROACH TO STRUCTURAL DESIGN

The question of durability in the construction sector is strictly linked to the principles of sustainable development. Nowadays, it is a common knowledge that the building sector is one of major consumer of non renewable raw materials and energy resources and the costs of management, maintenance, repair and refurbishment account for a large part in the economy of a country. Indded, the optimization of construction performances over the time is one of the most important goal to achieve for the sustainable management of the built up environment. Sustainable design of structures calls for the definition of innovative methodologies based on an integrated approach to structural design. In this perspective several requirements shall be achieved during the whole life cycle of the structure taking into account mechanical, environmental, economic and social performances as a whole.
